How to Become Unhappy?

Latvian National Theatre | 2024

In “How to Become Unhappy?” the video helps to create an immersive, realistic illusion of a metro station and highlight the satirical, somewhat surreal atmosphere of the performance. The screens show captured city scenes — public transport spaces, crowds of people, sometimes seen through the eyes of an anonymous observer moving through the crowd, and sometimes through the lens of a static surveillance camera.

The video creation process began with footage of the metro that I recorded while living in Paris between 2014 and 2019. Later, I supplemented this archive with material filmed specifically for the play, which I used to enhance the visual storytelling and atmosphere. Additionally, the performance features footage filmed by the characters on their phones, allowing the onstage action to be seen from alternative angles and close-ups.”

“Why do you still need to be happy today if you can be unhappy? Is it even possible to be happy? Maybe it’s just self-delusion? That’s probably why so many people today dive into meditation and then never come home, get lost somewhere, forget “How to become unhappy?”

In this performance, we will not only talk about techniques for creating fake problems, but also ways that will help you avoid solutions to problems and turn them into “eternal suffering”. This is an ironic, but very serious performance for all… those who want to become “unhappy”.
