The Reunification of the Two Koreas

National Kaunas Drama Theatre | 2023

From the very beginning of the creative process, the function of video projections in this production was clearly defined – to transfer the stage action onto the screen using cinematographic techniques that typically do not exist in theatre: close-ups, editing, and a diversity of camera angles. In this way, a dual reality was created on stage, where live action was accompanied by its cinematographic reflection on screen.

The main challenge was to integrate these cinematic tools naturally into the theatre environment, where everything unfolds in real time, with no possibility for retakes or edits between scenes. The creative process began at the earliest stages – from the initial readings – closely following rehearsals, developing the visual dramaturgy, and preparing shot lists for the camera operators and live video editor, who, during the performance, not only switches between cameras but also guides both operators with instructions on the current and upcoming shots.

2025 “Fortūna” award to director Artūras Areima and video artist Kristijonas Dirsė

“The image on stage becomes an equal performer. The screen is not just a close-up of a face – it is proof of emotion, a sign of vulnerability. The close-ups filmed in a cinematic manner serve the function of delicate emotional transitions, making video art fully organically embedded in the dramaturgy of the performance.”
Greta Vilnelė, Literatūra ir menas

“The nuanced world of love, brought close through cinematic close-ups, reaches the viewer directly. These video projections do not illustrate the stage action but rather extend and expand its emotional field.”
LRT

“A strong video art element that becomes an equal stage partner. Not a conventional background image, but a purposeful, dramaturgically significant layer.”

In the play the french playwright Joël Pommerat explores the feeling of love, combining the curiosity of a scientist and the passion of an artist. The director Artūras Areima is taking over this playful game.

The performance features fragmented stories about a variety of colours and manifestations of love/lovelessness. Sometimes love is comic, sometimes melodramatic, banal, ironic, absurd, surreal, or as complicated as the relationship between two hostile states. On the field of love, battles are fought, destinies are shattered, the most delicate nuances of feelings are stirred, and everybody is striving for the impossible – the perfect fulfilment of love. But perfection is hardly possible, because lovelessness, indifference, loss and disappointment are just different stages of the same emotion.

This collage of moments and random dialogues wittily lampoons the clichés of relationships taken from literature, film and television.
